Song Sparrow

song sparrow

The Song Sparrow is a relatively indescript sparrow. However, there is no mistaking its fondness for song.

The male typically moves from branch to branch in its area, singing at each stop, as a means of claiming territory and attracting females.

There are many variations of the species across the United States. Most have streaking in the breast and a dull colored bill. The song sparrow in the picture also shows the characteristic rust colored stripe behind the eye.

They are year round residents in most areas of the northern portion of United States. There is also a winter population in the southern United States.
