House Sparrow

male house sparrow picture

House sparrows are common throughout the United States, and get their name from their affinity for living in and near residential areas.

Most people are familiar with the nattily attired male House Sparrow, like the one in the picture.

The grey crown and black patch on the breast are characteristic of the species during breeding season. Females are a bit more indescript, with an orange conical bill and slight pale stript behind the eye.

House sparrows are primarily seed eaters and often set up year round residence in areas with bird feeders present.
