picture of a Ruddy Turnstone

The Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) is a medium sized shorebird that breeds in the Arctic and winters along coastal areas of the East and West.

During breeding season their back feathers turn a bright orange and black, and the chest feathers turn black with a white stripe.

They are one of two native Arenaria species in the Sandpiper family.
