Stink Bugs

picture of a stink bug

Although a few species of beneficial stink bugs (Pentatomidae) have been documented, many species not only stink, they are also labeled as agricultural pests.

Of course, other insect species adopt chemical defense mechanisms, so the moniker, stink bug, was probably used to give the insect extra prominence.

Most species can easily be identified by the presence of the triangle scutellum on the top of their abdomen. The picture does not clearly show the five segmented antennae.

Adults of some species have been known to overwinter and are known to cause a bit of inconvenience when found in homes.
