Mountain-dwelling Short-winged Katydid

picture of a mountain-dwelling short-winged katydid

Along with grasshoppers and crickets, katydids are members of the insect order Orthoptera.

Technically, katydids are classified in the Tettigoniidae family, with the Short-winged Katydids placed in a genus (Dichopetala) also known as False Katydids.

They are so named because False Katydid males produce a different sound than other Katydid species.

The top picture shows a colorful Mountain-dwelling Short-winged Katydid. The long antennae were cropped to show more of the body and legs.
