They get their name from their appearance. Their front legs are held upward, in what looks to be a praying position, as they sit and wait for prey, mostly small insects.
They have excellent eyesight, and up close, their face resembles an alien form common in many movies and comic books.
Humans consider Praying Mantids as beneficial insects. In gardens they eat the insects that eat the garden plants.
