Lubber Grasshoppers (Family Romaleidae) rank among the largest grasshoppers in the United States.
The Eastern Lubber (Romalea microptera) is known throughout the Southeast as a problematic grasshopper, often causing considerable agriculture damage.
They grow to a fairly large size, with adults typically displaying either a colorful body, as shown above, or a black body.
The picture shows an adult, basically wingless. They are not flying grasshoppers, rather they tend to walk at a slow and deliberate pace as they graze.
