Eastern Lubber Grasshopper

picture of an Eastern Lubber grasshopper

Lubber Grasshoppers (Family Romaleidae) rank among the largest grasshoppers in the United States.

The Eastern Lubber (Romalea microptera) is known throughout the Southeast as a problematic grasshopper, often causing considerable agriculture damage.

They grow to a fairly large size, with adults typically displaying either a colorful body, as shown above, or a black body.

The picture shows an adult, basically wingless. They are not flying grasshoppers, rather they tend to walk at a slow and deliberate pace as they graze.
