Dobsonfly

dobson fly

A visitor, rjones, had this to say about the dobson fly. This is a female dobson fly; a neuropteran in the same order as lacewings.

The larvae are the well known hellgrammites found in streams and ponds, and used as fish bait.

The mandibles are of many species are shorter in the females, while the males mandibles are several times longer than the head but flimsy. They're just to impress the ladies.
