Caddisfly

caddisfly pictureCaddisflies are medium sized winged insects in the Trichoptera order. There are literally thousands of caddisfly species.

Their larvae are aquatic insects and a favorite bait for fly fishermen.

They are able to produce silk like spiders, and build themselves protective cases.

They go through a few stages for a complete metamorphosis. The picture shows the last stage. The caddisly fly pupae was attached to the reed and emerged from its case on a warm spring afternoon.

The picture was taken about fifteen seconds after the caddisfly stepped out of its case. Its characteristic long antennae are already formed.
