Caddisfly
Caddisflies are medium sized winged insects in the Trichoptera order. There are literally thousands of caddisfly species.
They are able to produce silk like spiders, and build themselves protective cases.
They go through a few stages for a complete metamorphosis. The picture shows the last stage. The caddisly fly pupae was attached to the reed and emerged from its case on a warm spring afternoon.
The picture was taken about fifteen seconds after the caddisfly stepped out of its case. Its characteristic long antennae are already formed.
