Blister Beetle

picture of a pair of blister beetles

Blister beetles (family Meloidae) receive attention because of their ability to produce cantharidin, a chemical that can cause blisters on contact with skin.

Many of the three to four hundred North American species can cause problems for livestock when they get bundled up in hay bales used for livestock feed.

The picture shows a western species, the desert blister beetle (Lytta magister). Its bright color serves as a warning to potential predators. Eastern species tend to lack color, making it a good idea for most non-beetle experts to avoid coming in contact with thin bodied beetles.
