The adult Brown Pelican in this picture has the white face. It was teaching the juvenile how to take-off and land in the water.

Brown Pelicans are very acrobatic. They dive into the water to catch fish and as a young age, they need all the practice they can get. You can literally watch them for hours at a time practicing.
