Cypripedium Orchids

Calypso bulbosa picture

Cypripedium are hardy native orchid species found in a variety of habitat including fields, forests and wetlands.

Like the paphs, many individual species have a lady's slipper nickname, based on the shape of the bottom two petals.

The above picture, Calypso bulbosa, more commonly known as a calypso orchid, is a species native to the Pacific Northwest.

It is a small flowering plant that grows among old growth trees. It does not transplant well for home or garden use.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service provides a semi-comprehensive list of Cypripedium, with maps showing regional variations among species. At least one species is listed for every state, with the exception of Nevada and Florida.
