Crimson Patch

picture of the top view of a crimson patch butterfly

The Crimson Patch (Chlosyne janais) is a late summer and fall butterfly of South Texas and New Mexico.

A top view of the butterfly, displayed in the top picture, shows the black wings highlighted by red patches on the hindwings.

Compare a side view of the Crimson Patch with a side view of the Rosita Patch. The dark spots on the yellow patch of the hindwing are a very good field identification clue.

Although they have a wing pattern that differs from the Patch butterflies, a handful of checkerspot butterflies also fit into the Chlosyne genus.

Caterpillars feed on a variety of honeysuckle plants (Anisacanthus), whose flowers attrack hummingbirds. Adults nectar on a variety of flowers.
