California Sister

picture of a California Sister butterfly

The California Sister (Adelpha bredowii) and the Lorquin's Admiral (Limenitis lorquini) butterflies are similar looking West Coast butterflies in the Limenitidinae subfamily.

Two physical features, the circular mustard mark on the end of the top wing, and the blue stripe that runs across the top of the forewings, help identify the California Sister.

The California Sister has a more limited range than the Lorquin's Admiral. The caterpillar version feeds on oak leaves, and adults nectar on flowers in areas surrounding oak groves.
