California Crescent

picture of a California Crescent

The California Crescent butterfly (Phyciodes orseis) is a Western species with a very limited range.

It is also a mountain butterfly, found only in the Sierra Nevadas of Northern California and the Cascades of Southern Oregon. Mountain weather patterns mean the species is present only during summer months.

The wing color is a mix of orangish and cream block patters, with less dark coloring than the more common Field Crescent.

The caterpillars feed on plants in the thistle and sunflower family.
