Banded Peacock

picture of a banded peacock butterfly

Peacock butterflies are a tropical genus (Anartia), with four species documented in the United States.

The Banded Peacock (Anartia fatima) can be found throughout most of the year in the Lower Rio Grand Valley of Texas. It also strays to Southern Arizona.

The white and red stripe pattern on dark wings makes it easy to identify. The bottom picture shows that the pattern on the underside of the wings matches the pattern on the top side of the wings.

Caterpillars feed on wild Petunias (Ruellia).
