Black Walnut

picture of a pair of black walnuts on a tree

The Black Walnut tree is a large native hardwood, known equally for the quality of its wood and the quality of its nuts.

Most Black Walnut grows wild in the Midwest and East Coast. Some trees have been introduced into the Western United States, although no stocks are used for large scale commerical nut production.

The picture shows a pair of immature Black Walnuts in a thick green casing. When they mature and fall from the tree that can still be a tough nut to crack, but the taste is well worth the effort.

Black Walnut trees can grow very large, making them an excellent anchor tree in a large yard. When considering a Black Walnut, it is important to remember that the roots produce a toxic chemical, juglone. Careful consideration needs to be given to planting the tree with other shrubs and plants not affected by the chemical.
