Types of Nuts

When the subject is nuts, almonds, macadamia nut, peanuts, pecans and pistachios, typically dominate the American conversation.

Nut bearing trees can be found in most areas of the United States, and many of the less commercial species also offer some compelling stories.

As a group, nut trees are often touted as sturdy hardwoods, capable of anchoring the center or corner of almost any lawn. Coupled with a fruit tree, they offer shade as well as a balanced diet to local wildlife.

With the exception of the hazelnut, the five types of nut trees listed in the box are not especially known for the edibility of the nuts they produce. However, each tree does produce edible nuts.
