Tips for Taking Pictures of the Moon

Moon Over "fill in the blank" is a popular nature photography subject anywhere the moon rises and falls.

The day time and night time examples on this page show the moon with different backgrounds.

The top picture is Moon Over Saguaro National Park. It was taken at dusk, as the blue sky began to darken. The Saguaro Cactus in the foreground serves to add depth to the picture. The landscape mode on most digital cameras is sufficient for taking a picture that shows the moon against a blue sky.

Taking a picture of a full moon against a black background is as easy as setting the shutter speed and extending the camera's zoom lens to its maximum setting.

Lower shutter speeds tend to reproduce the moon with a brighter white color.
