Mount Washington

picture of Mount Washington in the Oregon Cascades

The Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest are traditionally divided into two geological eras.

The age of the Old Cascades fits into a time frame that spans tens of millions of years, and the age of the New Cascades fits into a time frame roughly ranging around one million years.

The first president of the United States has been honored with a couple of mountains named for him. Mount Washington, in central Oregon, is a part of the new Cascades.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates its age at, "no more than a few 100,000 years".

The area now carries a wilderness designation and is used for recreational purposes only. During the summer months, patches of snow remain on the peak, which is pictured above.
