The top picture shows a Texas Wasp Moth (Horama panthalon), and it provides a visible example of some subfamily characteristics.
The thin waist and wings give it a semblance of a wasp nectaring on flowers. The mimicry provides the moth protection from predators that are naturally adverse to wasps.
Unlike many moths, the evolution of mimicry in wasp moths allows them to move rather freely during the day.
Most, if not all, of the wasp moth species, live in the southern areas of the United States.
