Underwing Moths

picture of an underwing moth

Underwing moths are a group of colorful moths in the genus (Catocala).

As a group they share the physical characteristics of having top wings with a color that blends with tree bark. The underwings are brightly yellow to red colored with dark stripes.

The Moth Photographer's Group published a photographic essay on many different underwing species. The pictures show their sharing similar shades of underwing color.

Identifying any particular species must depend on location.
