Polyphemus Moth

Polyphemus moth picture

The Polyphemus Moth is one of the largest moths in the United States.

It is a member of the family Saturniinae and more commonly known as one of the Giant Silkworm Moths.

It is named for the cyclops in Homer's Odyssey. The one in the picture looks as if it has recently been treated as well as Odysseus treated the mythical character.

The large size and light color wings marked by four prominent eye spots makes for easy identification. They are found in small groups across the United States in open space areas that have trees suitable for the larvae (oak, birch).
