Cinnabar Moth

cinnabar moth

Butterflies with red wings are a rarity, so seeing one means the odds are it is a Cinnabar moth (Tyria jacobaeae).

They are introduced into many areas of the United States to control Ragwort, a wildflower that is poisonous to livestock.

The caterpillars feed on Ragwort. The adult moths are harmless.
