Monkeyflowers

Monkeyflowers are a very large genus (Mimulus) of flowering plants in the figwort family (Scrophulariaceae).

The vast majority of species are found in the Western United States, although species can be found throughout North America, including Canada and Alaska.

Flower size is generally small, to very small, and petal color differs from species to species.

The two pictures presented here show yellow representatives of the genera. Bigelow's Monkeyflower is an example of a flower with purple petals.

Most, if not all of the mimulus species are characterized by petals with dual colors. The top picture, for example, is the seep or common monkeyflower. It grows in wetlands areas and the yellow petals are dotted with small red spots.

The bottom picture shows the wingstem monkeyflower. It is a very small yellow flower with a red spot and red lines on the petals. It grows on sides of cliffs.
