Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina), true seals in the family Phocidaeare, make their home along many coastlines in the northern hemisphere.
They can grow up to six feet in length and weigh in at three hundred and fifty pounds. Their fur color varies from gray to brown, and some have darker spots or circles over the body.
Harbor seals tend to congregate in small groups while resting on the shoreline. Females also remain on shore during breeding season.
Sometimes harbor seals are called sea dogs, and the name rightly suggests their having a disposition akin to a family pet. You often find them fishing close to shore or around harbors and other areas where fishermen bring home their catch of the day.
