Red-crescent Scrub-Hairstreak

picture of a Red-crescent Scrub-Hairstreak butterfly

The Red-crescent Scrub-Hairstreak (Strymon rufofusca) is a fairly uncommon tropical Strymon species for the United States.

The top picture was taken at Edinburg World Birding Center, a man-made wetlands area, and a portion of a larger city park, in Edingurg, South Texas. The park provides a very good model for locations that might want to upgrande their planned parks to enhance their wildlife protection.

The Red-lined Scrub-Hairstreak looks similar, but has a straighter postmedian line.

The caterpillars feed on plants in the mallow family.
