Lantana Scrub-Hairstreak

picture of a Lantana Scrub-Hairstreak butterfly

The Lantana Scrub-Hairstreak (Strymon bazochii) is a subtropical species with a small population in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

Like other Strymon, they are known to sit with open wings. The top side of their wings are a nice, color coordinated brown and blue.

The picture shows a side view of the butterfly. The absence of a tail, similar to the more common North American elfins, makes it, along with the tailless scrub-hairstreak, anonomolies in the Strymon genus.

The caterpillars feed on Lantana plants.
