Arrowhead Blue

picture of a side view of am Arrowhead Blue butterfly

While many of the blue butterflies share common patterns on the underside of the wing, making for identification difficulties, that rule of thumb does not hold for the Arrowhead Blue (Glaucopsyche piasus).

The distinct gray and whitepattern with balck spots on the underside of the wings, shown in the top picture, makes it practically impossible to misidentify the species, providing you can find one.

Their range extends throughout higher elevation areas of the Western United States.

Like so many of the blue butterflies, lupines serve as the host plant for the caterpillars.
