Whiptail Lizards

desert grassland whiptail

Whiptail lizards (genus Cnemidophorus) are a group of lizards with characteristically long tails.

Many members of the species are identified by the stripe and spot patterns on their body. The Desert Grassland Whiptail in the top picture, for example, is identified by the six yellow stripes that run down its back and sides. The body lacks spots.

Some whiptails are also asexual, having the ability to produce offspring without an external source of fertilization.

Whiptails live in the desert Southwest. They wander around the desert floor in search of insects and spiders.

Compare the picture of the Desert Grassland Whiptail with the following picture of the juvenile Tiger Whiptail.

The most striking difference between the two might be the tail color. Juvenile Tiger Whiptails have blue tails.

Upon closer inspection, the image also shows spots beneath the top stripes.
