Side Blotched Lizard

picture of Side Blotched Lizard

The Side-blotched Lizard (Uta stansburiana) is a native lizard of the Western United States, with five regional subspecies.

The blotch on the side refers to the black spot behind the front leg of the lizard, visible in the top picture. That mark is a good field identification clue for a lizard that can otherwise resemble a Sagebrush lizard.

They are a very common desert species. The Uta genus was named for Utah, the state where they were first discovered.
