None are native to the United States, however, a handful of species have been introduced and established populations in southern areas of the United States from California to Florida.
The name house gecko derives from their affinity for living around residential areas. They are nocturnal animals that tend to change color depending on temperature and background.
Their changing appearance makes for difficult species identification. The top picture, for example, shows a nondescript, light colored, house gecko in the early morning hours. The lack of eyelids and vertical pupils are sufficient to identify it as a gecko.
