Five-lined Skink

picture of a Five-lined Skink

The Five-lined Skink or Blue-tailed Skink (Eumeces fasciatus), a wide spread woodland species, ranges from Southern Canada to Central Florida. It's the only native lizard that lives in New England.

Juveniles, like that pictured above, have dark bodies with five light stripes, along with the blue tail. As they need maturity the blue tail fades. Mature males also lose their stripes and develop a red head.

Their diet consists of insects, spiders and snails.
