Chuckwalla

picture of a chuckwalla

Chuckwalla lizards are a genus of lizards (Sauromalus) in the Iguana family (Iguanidae).

Second largest lizard, next to the Gila Monster, the Common Chuckwalla (Sauromalus ater) is the native United States species, found in rocky habitats across the Southwestern United States.

The top picture shows a rather drab looking Chuckwalla. The lack of coloration is most likely an artifact of the environment. Like other lizards, they tend to change color to adapt to environmental conditions.

Unlike many lizards, Chuckwallas are primarily herbivores. Their diet consists of flowers and plants.
