The Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei), a native Cuban and Bahama anole species, was introduced into Florida during the late nineteenth century.

Their hardy nature translated into a population explosion throughout the state, north to surrounding states. Concerns regarding its encroachment on the native green anole territory, thereby contributing to green anole population decreases are commonly expressed. With the exception of some growth in residential brown anole populations, to date their is little research available to support the claims.

The top picture shows a popular anole pose, with the dewlap exposed. This flap under the skin is often extended as a mating ritual.
