Pin-tailed Pondhawk

picture of a female pin-tailed pondhawk

The Pin-tailed Pondhawk (Erythemis plebeja) is one of four pondhawk species found in the United States.

It's a tropical pondhawk, with a United States range limited to the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas and South Florida.

Physically, the dark body color makes it the only pondhawk without the stereotypical green or blue pondhawk body.

Both sexes show similar abdomen patterns. The female in the top picture shows a more distinct light brown color with a broad white mark on the top of the abdomen.

The male in the bottom picture has a darket thorax and abdomen. Both pictures show the narrow abdomen.
