The name sounds as if it should be an East Coast dragonfly. However, it is a common visitor to ponds and lakes on both coasts.
The top picture shows the female, with the characteristic white face hidden. The dark spots on the inner lower wings are field identification clues, as is the line of triangular yellow marks running down the abdomen.
Males have red pattern markings.
