Four-spotted Skimmer

picture of a four-spotted skimmer dragonfly

Four-spotted Skimmers (Libellula quadrimaculata) are one of three different spotted skimmers with numbers in their name.

In keeping with the pattern that the numbers designate the number of dark spots on the wings, the dragonfly might be called the six-spotted skimmer. However, the scientists did not count the black pterostigma, the dark spot at the tip of the wings.

For identification purposes, also note the amber color on the edge of the wings.

The mustard or dark yellowish color on the thorax and abdomen, along with the yellow stripes on the side of the abdomen also make good field identification marks.

Males and females look similar, so identifying gender with one picture is problematic.

The species is widespread throughout much of the northern parts of the United States.
