Eight-spotted Skimmer Dragonfly

picture of an Eight-spotted Skimmer dragonfly

Eight-spotted Skimmers (Libellula forensis) are West Coast Dragonflies characterized by eight dark spots on the wings. Often white spots appear between the dark spots.

They are also one of three different dragonflies with a number affixed to the name.

In addition to the look of the wings, the yellow marks on the side of the abdomen are a good field identification clue.

Mature males have bodies covered in white.

They live in ponds, lakes and other slow water bodies, flying from early spring through late fall.
