Double-ringed Pennant

picture of a male Double-ringed Pennant dragonfly

The Celithemis genus of pennants consists of some colorful species. The Double-ringed Pennant (Celithemis verna) bucks the general genus trend.

Two light bands at the top of an otherwise dark abdomen characterize female. Males, like the one pictured above, are a rather nondescript dark color, with light spots on the inside of the wings.

They are an eastern species, with a northern range extending to Southern New Jersey. The western range extends to Texas.
