Most species grow low to the ground and in bunches. Single flowers can be found blooming on a thin stem, typically from late spring through early summer, depending on location.
In the wild, they grow in partially shaded areas, making them perfect wildflowers for out of the way rock gardens in the corner of a yard.
Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to many columbine varieties, adding to their popularity as garden flowers.
The top picture shows the Western Columbine (Aquilegia formosa). It is also called Red Columbine, and it can be found in Rocky Mountain states as well as along the West Coast.
