They are members of the daffodil family (Amaryllidaceae) that grow in temperate climates with a minimum amount of human effort. Part of their appeal is their early spring blooms.
Less known is that daffodils also make decorative house plants. As such, they provide the gardener a choice of blooming seasons.
The Planting Fall Bulbs article provides more detail. A quick sketch of bulb forcing starts with refrigerating bulbs in soil to replicate their winter resting and development cycle.
When the plant is removed from the refrigerator and placed in the house, bloom time normally follows within the month.
The flowers are toxic, and keeping them apart from pets and small children is advisable.
