Squat Lobster

picture of a squat lobster

Squat lobster is the general name given to a variety of crustaceans in the Galatheidae and Chirostylidae families.

Over eight hundred different species have been identified living in near shore and deep sea habitats. Most are under five inches in length and tend to press their bodies against rocks in their environment, giving them the appearance of squatting.

Many species are commercially harvested, although their small size often serves as a commercial harvest deterrent.
