Green Nature

Magnificent Hummingbird

picture of a magnificent hummingbird

Magnificent hummingbirds (Eugenes fulgens) are a comparatively large hummingbird, found mostly in the mountain areas of the desert Southwest.

Most winter in Mexico, however, a few have been recorded in the American South.

Field identification is relatively easy. The male's green gorgets and purple crown, that shine iridescent in the sun, are unique.

Females, like the one in the picture, generally have green on the back. The light underside has green spots.
