Green Nature

Broad-billed Hummingbird (Cynanthus latirostris).

male and female Broadbilled Hummingbird picture

Broad-billed hummingbirds are a southern species, with the majority of the United States' breeding population located in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

It does range a bit further, with documented visits to Louisiana in the east and California in the west. Neighboring states report sporadic visits.

The male, like the one pictured on the top left, has an orange-black bill and iridescent blue body.

The red at the bottom of the bill is a field identification mark for the female. The picture on the right shows a much lighter underside.
