Anna's Hummingbird

picture of a male anna's hummingbird

Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) are a common hummingbird species on the West Coast.

They are relatively hardy birds. Some overwinter along the West Coast as far north as Washington State. In Oregon and Washington State small populations winter in lowlands West of the Cascade mountains.

The male and female have green uppdersides and a spotted, light color underside. The picture shows a juvenile male developing the characteristic red gorget. The crown and gorget shine red in the sun on adult males.
