Pear on Tree

picture of a peal on a tree

Pears, like apples, grow on decidious trees, although they are not as easy to grow as apple trees.

They are a very sweet fruit that is picked before ripe. Again, unlike apples, they can be stored for long periods of time before ripening. You can purchase a couple at a grocery store and keep them in your refrigerator crisper, often for a couple of weeks, before taking them out to ripen.

In addition to their sweet taste, pears also provide a decent source of dietary fiber and Vitamin C to the diet.

The average American consumes 5.2 pounds of pears per year (Fresh 2.9, Canning 2.3)
