While they grow in a variety of poor soil conditions, they are very temperature sensitive. A Florida freeze wiped out the lemon crop in the nineteenth century and today only California and Arizona produce commercial lemons.
With the exception of lemonade, most people consider lemons as food and beverage flavor enhancers rather than solo foods. On average, Americans eat 6.4 pounds of lemons per year.
