Huckleberries

picture of a huckleberry

Huckleberries is a name given to a couple of different plants in the same family as blueberries.

Eastern Huckleberries are members of the genus Gaylussacia. Western Huckleberries are members of the genus Vaccinium.

The plants grow wild in many areas of the United States. The berries do not store or ship well, so most berry picking is for personal consumption or local commerce.

If you find yourself walking around a huckleberry patch, in late summer or fall, allow your eyes to roam the sourrounding grounds. I've seen boletes growing. However, mycologists suggest that there is not enought research to make specific mycorrhizal associations with the plant.
