North America history can often be told as apple history. It starts with English and French colonialists bringing seeds and grafs of their favorite varieties with them across the Atlantic.
As state boundaries moved West, apple orchards, planted by pioneers such as Johnny Appleseed, became a mainstay of the scenery.
By the end of the nineteenth century apple orchards could be found from coast to coast. Today Washington state leads the United States in apple production, growing almost half of the total.
On average, Americans consume 45.8 pounds per year, making apples the third most popular fruit behind oranges and grapes.
Apples are an excellent source of dietary fiber and an inspirational fruit to people around the world.
